Gangnery, Aline.
The aim of this work is to study reproductive effort of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera. In order to reach this objective, two experiences were planned. First, we decidcd to follow in situ growth and reproduction of pearl oysters of three age groups : l, 2 and 3 years old. This projcct began at the end of march 1997 and is planned for one year. The results presented in this study stopped at the end of july 1997. This experience is based on the bimonthly sampling of 120 pearl oysters (40 from every age group) from the lagoon of Takapoto (Tuamotu, French Polynesia). ln a second part, an experience was lead in laboratory, on the same animals. The objective was to trigger artificially spawns and to harvest genital products to estimate values of...

Gangnery, Aline.
In Thau Iagoon (Mediterranean Sea), shellfish are cultured in suspension. Molluscs are reared on ropes that are suspended on frames. Principal species concerned by breeding are Crassostrea gigas, Mytilus galloprovincialis and, in a less extent, Ostrea edulis. A new sampling method was developped to assess the total stock of cultured shellfish and was tested in July 1998 and April 1999. The total stock was found to be 19500 tons (± 1120 SE) in 1998 and 14100 tons (± 830 SE) in 1999, thus exhibiting temporal variations. Temporal differences in the total stock are mainly attributable to the breeding cycle but also to sorne exceptionnal events which occurred in Thau lageon in 1997 and 1998 (water anoxia, bacteriological crisis, bloom of toxic algae). In the...

Gametogenic cycle and reproductive effort of the tropical blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (Bivalvia : Pteriidae), cultivated in Takapoto atoll (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Gangnery, Aline; Tiapari, Jerome; Lagarde, Franck; Garnier, Matthieu; Bodoy, Alain.
The gametogenic cycle and the reproductive effort of the blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivated in Takapoto lagoon were studied for a 1-year period (March 1997-April 1998) by bimonthly observations of gonadal sections, dry tissue weights and gonadal index in a population of pearl oyster composed of three age-groups. pearl oysters attained sexual maturity in the end of their first year (height approximate to 40 mm), implying that P. margaritifera is a late-maturing species in comparison with other Pteriidae. This species was also confirmed to be a marked protandrous successive hermaphrodite in culture, with 100 % of males at first maturity and 75 % in older pearl oyster (height > 120 mm). The general pattern of gametogenic activity,...

Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, in suspended culture under hydrobiological conditions of Takapoto lagoon (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Tiapari, Jerome; Gangnery, Aline; Lagarde, Franck; Garnier, Matthieu; Teissier, Hinano; Haumani, G; Buestel, Dominique; Bodoy, Alain.
Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingi, was studied for an annual cycle, from March 1997 to April 1998, in the lagoon of Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia). Growth in shell and in tissue were measured every 15 days on three successive age groups of cultivated pearl oysters. At the same time, hydrobiological parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, suspended particulate matter), known to have influence on bivalve growth, were followed each week during culture. No seasonal trend was observed in hydrobiological parameters, except for temperature which varied between 26 degrees C and 31 degrees C. The potential food for pearl oysters (particulate organic matter, POM, mg l(-1)) was slightly...

Rapport final ArchiMer
Buestel, Dominique; Alunno Bruscia, Marianne; Chabirand, Jean-michel; Vercelli, Catherine; Oheix, Jocelyne; Pichot, Yves; Gangnery, Aline.

Gangnery, Aline.
The total standing stock of bivalves cultured in Thau Lagoon (France) that is mainly constituted of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, and the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, vary between 14,000 and 20,000 tons within a year. These variations were attributed to the rearing cycle of molluscs in the lagoon but also to their growth performances. Oysters cultured in the Thau Lagoon presented the best growth rate ever reported whereas trophic conditions are low : mean concentrations in organic particulate matter and total chlorophyll a averaged 1 mg.l-1 and 1.2 µg.l-1, respectively. The development of a growth model shows that temporal pattern (i.e. seasonality) of bivalve growth is explained by water temperature and spatial pattern is...

Use of dynamic energy budget and individual based models to simulate the dynamics of cultivated oyster populations ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Gangnery, Aline.
We successfully tested a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model of the oyster Crassostrea gigas using published environmental data and growth data collected in Than lagoon (France). Estimates of most DEB parameters were based on independent datasets and only two parameters were calibrated using our datasets: the shape parameter, which was used to convert body volume into shell length, and the half-saturation coefficient, which controlled the functional response of assimilation to food concentration, represented by chlorophyll-a concentration. The DEB model proved to be robust and generic: it was able to reproduce oyster growth in Than lagoon and other ecosystems. We also assessed population dynamics by coupling DEB equations and an Individual Based Model (IBM)...

The Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model (Kooijman, S.A.L.M., 1986. Energy budgets can explain body size relations. J. Theor. Biol. 121, 269¿282; Kooijman, S.A.L.M., 2000. Dynamic Energy and Mass Budgets in Biological Systems. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 424 pp.) has been adapted to describe the dynamics of growth and reproduction of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in different areas under conditions ranging from controlled to natural. The values of the model parameters were estimated from available physiological data and from published information. The sets of data used to validate the model came from three long-term growth experiments (> 5 months) performed on Pacific oysters reared under different conditions of food and...

Nogues, Loic; Gangnery, Aline.
Since 1989, the standing stock of bivalves cultivated in Normandy was estimated every 5 years by Ifremer. Within the frame of the OGIVE project, a new study was conducted in 2006 to evaluate the mussel standing stock. Classical sampling methods (stratified, two-stage and simple random sampling) were used and adapted to each culture area. The total standing stock in Normandy was evaluated to 23 550 tons with a precision of 10.94 %. The west coast of Cotentin remained the main production area in Normandy with approximately 22 000 tons of mussels, whereas the east coast and the baie des Veys only represented a small part of the total stock (respectively 6% and 1%). The collected data were also used to map the spatial distribution of mussel biomasses. This map...

Modelling Crassostrea gigas growth and reproduction in different contrasted ecosystems by using dynamic energy budgets : generic validation of the oyster-DEB model ArchiMer
Bourles, Yves; Maurer, Daniele; Le Moine, Olivier; Geairon, Philippe; Mazurie, Joseph; Gangnery, Aline; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Pouvreau, Stephane; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Oyster farming is the main aquaculture activity in France, where Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is spatially cultured from the English Channel to the Mediterranean coasts. Oyster growth performance monitored along French coasts are widely heterogeneous among culture sites and over years. Many studies have been carried out to understand the effects of environmental factors on oyster growth and physiology, by using bioenergetics growth models. However, most of these studies were site-specific. As an example, the model developed by Barillé et al. (1997), which was extensively specified with more than 50 parameters, was validated in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, but cannot be successfully applied to other culture sites without re-estimating parameters or...

Individual mussel growth model using DEB (Dynamic Energy Budget) theory: revisiting the DEB parameter values for Mytilus edulis ArchiMer
Flye Sainte Marie, Jonathan; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Gangnery, Aline; Rannou, Eric; Rosland, Rune; Strand, Øivind.
Mussel aquaculture is well developed in various ecosystems of temperate waters. In the aim of developing predictive tools for management of mussel aquaculture, a better understanding of relationships between the environmental conditions and mussel growth is necessary. For this purpose, development of bioenergetic models, linking environmental variables (especially food resource and temperature) and mussel growth and reproduction, are of a particular interest. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory offers a general framework to study energy flows in organisms, from assimilation to use for maintenance, growth and reproduction. This theory is appropriate for growth modelling of marine organisms and have first been applied in 1993 to model mussel growth....

A single bio-energetics growth and reproduction model for the oyster Crassostrea gigas in six Atlantic ecosystems ArchiMer
Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Bourles, Yves; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Stephane; Mazurie, Joseph; Gangnery, Aline; Goulletquer, Philippe; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Many studies based on bioenergetics growth models have investigated the effects of environmental factors on oyster (Crassostrea gigas) growth and physiology. However, most of these models are site-specific and cannot be applied to other culture sites without the re-estimation of parameters or re-formulation of some processes. We aimed to develop a generic growth model suitable for application in contrasting environments, with a constant set of parameters. We tested the oyster-DEB model (Bourlès et al. 2009) for the stimulation of C. gigas growth in different cohorts (spats and adults) at major shellfish culture sites in France, in several years: Arcachon (1993–1994); Marennes-Oléron (2007); Quiberon (1999, 2000, 2001); Rade de Brest (2008); Baie du...

Spatial and temporal interaction between sediment and microphytobenthos in a temperate estuarine macro-intertidal bay ArchiMer
Orvain, Francis; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Montepini, J.; Sebire, M.; Gangnery, Aline; Sylvand, B..
Intertidal flats of the estuarine macro-intertidal Baie des Veys (France) were investigated to identify spatial features of sediment and microphytobenthos (MPB) in April 2003. Gradients occurred within the domain, and patches were identified close to vegetated areas or within the oyster-farming areas where calm physical conditions and biodeposition altered the sediment and MPB landscapes. Spatial patterns of chl a content were explained primarily by the influence of sediment features, while bed elevation and compaction brought only minor insights into MPB distribution regulation. The smaller size of MPB patches compared to silt patches revealed the interplay between physical structure defining the sediment landscape, the biotic patches that they contain,...

Spatial Variability of Benthic-Pelagic Coupling in an Estuary Ecosystem: Consequences for Microphytobenthos Resuspension Phenomenon ArchiMer
Ubertini, Martin; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Gangnery, Aline; Grangere, Karine; Le Gendre, Romain; Orvain, Francis.
The high degree of physical factors in intertidal estuarine ecosystem increases material processing between benthic and pelagic compartments. In these ecosystems, microphytobenthos resuspension is a major phenomenon since its contribution to higher trophic levels can be highly significant. Understanding the sediment and associated microphytobenthos resuspension and its fate in the water column is indispensable for measuring the food available to benthic and pelagic food webs. To identify and hierarchize the physical/biological factors potentially involved in MPB resuspension, the entire intertidal area and surrounding water column of an estuarine ecosystem, the Bay des Veys, was sampled during ebb tide. A wide range of physical parameters (hydrodynamic...

Towards the Determination of Mytilus edulis Food Preferences Using the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) Theory ArchiMer
Picoche, Coralie; Le Gendre, Romain; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Francoise, Sylvaine; Maheux, Frank; Simon, Benjamin; Gangnery, Aline.
The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a commercially important species, with production based on both fisheries and aquaculture. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models have been extensively applied to study its energetics but such applications require a deep understanding of its nutrition, from filtration to assimilation. Being filter feeders, mussels show multiple responses to temporal fluctuations in their food and environment, raising questions that can be investigated by modeling. To provide a better insight into mussel–environment interactions, an experiment was conducted in one of the main French growing zones (Utah Beach, Normandy). Mussel growth was monitored monthly for 18 months, with a large number of environmental descriptors measured in parallel....
